FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

 1. Are you open to the public?

Yes.  All of our locations are open to the public during the hours listed below.

 

2. What are your hours?

Our summer hours are:

Monday - Friday 7:30-5:30

Saturday 9:00-4:00

Our winter hours are:

Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00

Saturday 9:00-4:00

 

3. Are your products natural or man-made?

Yes.  Stone NW specializes in all natural materials.  Natural stone is superior in quality and longevity compared to man-made alternatives, and we feel the inherent beauty of natural stone is unparalleled.

 

4. How is stone sold?

Most of our products are sold by weight, either by pound or ton.  Our dimensional pavers and stair treads are sold by the square foot, and our bubblers are sold by the linear foot.

 

5. How much do I have to buy?

There is no minimum purchase.  We're happy to provide as little or as much stone as your project requires.

 

6. How much stone will I need for my project?

Estimate how much you'll need by measuring your square footage, which is length x width. This applies to walkways or patios, and walls too. Since the thicknesses of stone depends on the application, it can vary a lot.  Visit our How-To page for further details, or stop by the store and we'll be happy to assist.

 

7. How much is a ton?  How much does a ton of rock cover?

A ton is 2,000 lbs.  The coverage of offered varies by the material and how it will be used in the projected.  Most stepstone and flagstone will cover about 100sq/ft per ton, where rock used for building a walls will average 15-25 sq/ft of all face per ton. 

 

8. How much does a full pallet of stone weigh?

Most of our building and patio stone come palletizes, and range between 1.5-2 tons each (3,000-4,000 lbs).

 

9. Can we pick the rocks we want?

Yes, we always keep a few pallets open so you can find that perfect rock.  If your large project requires a high grade of a particular material, please let us know.  We're happy to accomodate as we can.

 

10. Do you deliver?  How much does it cost?

We can schedule delivery through one of several delivery companies in the area.  It makes it easier on everyone involved if there is a comfortable time frame to work in, so we request two days of lead time.  However, we understand schedules can change in a moment, so let us if you need it sooner.  Cost depends on the quantity, type of stone, and location but the typical delivery charge is between $85-$115 in the greater Portland area.

 

11. Do you sell crushed gravels, or other ground cover such as bark?

Yes, each of our locations has a diffferent selection, please call for availability.

 

12. What other products do you offer?

We also carry a full line of pond and waterfeature supplies (including pumps, liners, hose and fittings), statuaries and benches, diamond cutting blades, hand carved birdbaths and bubblers.  Fireplace and firepit kits are also available.

 

13. Do I have to load my own vehicle?

We have equipment to assist loading your vehicle, however if you have a smaller enclosed vehicle please keep in mind we may be limited as to what can be loaded.

 

14. Do you have samples available?

Yes, we encourage you to take as many samples as you need.

 

15. What is a 1-man or 2-man rock?

The general size of a rock is often divided in terms of how many men it would take to move it.  A one-man rock is a rock up to 300 lbs. A two man rock is about 300-800 lbs.  Anything larger usually requires a machine to move and place properly.

 

16. Do you design or install?

No, Stone NW does not offer installation services.  However, we work very closely with many highly skilled contractors.  Come in with your idea or plans and we'll be happy to put you in contact with a landscape designer or stone mason who fits your project.
